If you own a domain name, particularly a .IE domain name, you may have gotten an email in recent days from DNSIreland.org, advising the following:
“We have received a request for the registration of the website YourSite.com. Our system shows that you are the owner of YourSite.ie. This can have far-reaching consequences for you in the future. We are therefore under the obligation to contact you, in order to offer you the first right of registration.“
The email goes on to explain that the sender can provide domain registration services, but unusually, they claim they are obliged to register domains for a period of 10 years at a cost of €199.50 This is a dishonest attempt to scare domain owners into registering .COM alternatives of their domains.
In the event that you’ve received this mail, you can safely ignore it. If you have any concerns about your domain or .COM/.NET/.EU alternatives etc., please don’t hesitate to give our web department a call on 056 7786882
