Ransomware Awareness Month

July is recognised as Ransomware Awareness Month. This initiative aims to educate individuals and businesses on how to defend against the growing threat of ransomware.

About Ransomware Awareness Month

Ransomware Awareness Month is an annual campaign dedicated to increasing awareness about ransomware, it’s devastating effects, and the steps everyone can take to prevent becoming a victim.

What is Ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of malicious software (malware) that encrypts files on a victim’s computer or locks them out of their system. The attackers then demand a ransom payment, often in cryptocurrency, in exchange for the decryption key or access restoration. Common methods of distribution include phishing emails, malicious websites, and exploiting software vulnerabilities.

Crypto Ransomware

Encrypts files, making them inaccessible without the decryption key.

Locker Ransomware

Locks the user out of their system entirely.

Scareware

Mimics antivirus or cleanup tools and demands payment to fix non-existent issues.

How to Protect Yourself

Keep Software Up to Date

Ensure your operating system, antivirus software, and all other programs are regularly updated with the latest security patches to prevent vulnerabilities from being exploited.

Keep Software Up to Date

Ensure your operating system, antivirus software, and all other programs are regularly updated with the latest security patches to prevent vulnerabilities from being exploited.

Be Wary of Email Attachments and Links

Do not open email attachments or click on links from unknown or untrusted sources. Always verify the sender’s legitimacy before interacting with any email content.

Educate Yourself and Your Team

Stay informed about the latest ransomware threats and educate your team on how to recognise and avoid potential attacks.

Regularly Backup Your Data

Back up your data frequently to an external hard drive or cloud storage. Make sure your backups are disconnected from your main system to prevent them from being affected in an attack.

What To Do If You Are Infected

Do Not Pay the Ransom

Paying the ransom does not guarantee that you will regain access to your data, and it encourages further criminal activity.

Report the Incident

Report the ransomware attack to the relevant authorities and your cybersecurity insurance provider if applicable.

Disconnect Your Device

Immediately disconnect your device from the network to prevent the ransomware from spreading.

Seek Professional Help

Consult BITS to assist with removing the ransomware and restoring your data from backups.
