At BITS we provide a variety of VoIP and traditional phone system solutions to clients across many sectors and sizes. (VoIP stands for “Voice over IP” which is a technology that allows for the delivery of voice calls over the Internet.)
Our solutions vary because our clients’ requirements and infrastructures vary.
VoIP connections are made over the internet. And voice data is transmitted over the internet in so-called data packets. Such connections always have a degree of latency – the time delay between transmission and reception of a packet of data. And, if that latency is high enough, call quality suffers:
- People talking over each other
- Echoes
- Interrupted calls
One of the main causes of latency is the quality of your internet connection – its speed and the network bandwidth. If either of these are an issue for you, then VoIP might not be your best option.
Where you do not have a good internet connection, we can provide you with a non-VoIP phone system using a traditional PBX (private branch exchange).
When your internet connection is solid and fast, a full VoIP solution is an option. And it brings with it the cost savings of not needing to pay for phone-line rental. However, that potential saving in itself does not automatically mean that a full VoIP solution is best for you.
Imagine, for instance, if you have a large number of employees in your building, all of whom are regularly making internal calls to colleagues. With a full VoIP solution, all these calls would be routed out of the building onto the Internet and then back into the building. That adds a lot of (data) traffic to your already busy network. In that type of environment, a hybrid solution may be optimal. In a hybrid solution a traditional PBX can be used to handle internal calls while external calls use VoIP.
When it comes to VoIP phone systems, it is definitely not a one size fits all. That is precisely why we have partnered with a number of VoIP suppliers and have implemented full VoIP solutions (hosted in the cloud), while also offering hybrid solutions incorporating both VoIP and traditional land lines.
